The best dressed runners
The finale in the competition for the runner best dressed in 1912 style was held during the Post race party on Sunday 15 July. This was very much appreciated by the other runners and the volunteers who attended the party.
The winner was Fredrik Holst from Stockholm. Sally Osterberg from USA got second price. She ran the Jubilee Marathon, dressed as her grandfather was when he finished 17th in the 1912 Olympic marathon race in Stockholm.
The 50 best dressed runners all got a bowl of ceramics, specially made for the Jubilee Marathon. Read more.

Almost every one finished
7,905 runners started in the Jubilee Marathon. 7,674 of them finished the race. This means that only 231 runners, or 3 per cent of those who started, had to abandon the race.
4,127 ran 42,195 metres and 3,547 ran the 40,075 meteres distance.

The Jubilee Marathon is a three days event. It all starts nn Friday 13 July with the Marathon Expo. You can go a guided tour of the hundred years old Olympic Stadium, watch a film from the 1912 Olympic Games and listen to an interesting lecture about the Olympic marathon race in Stockholm.

Two stars from 1912 in the Jubilee Marathon
Kennedy Kane McArthur from South Africa won the gold medal in the 1912 Olympic marathon race in Stockholm 1912. The Swedish star Sigge Jacobsson, who was the favourite among the spectators, finished sixth as the best European runner.
On Saturday both of them will run the Jubilee Marathon.

Competition: Who is running in the best 1912 style dress?
The Jubilee Marathon is a race in the spirit of 1912, and we hope that many runners come dressed in 1912 style. We will give out prizes to the 50 runners who run the race in clothing (not shoes) that is most similar to the clothing of the runners in the Olympic marathon race 1912. The winner will be awarded with a miniature of the medal for the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912-2012 in 18 carat gold.

Shizo Kanaguri dropped out of the very warm marathon race during the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. Some decades later the myth of him as “The Japanese who disappeared” was created. Now his grand grandson Yoshiaki Kurado will come to Stockholm to run the Jubilee Marathon.

Medical guidelines
A marathon race is a real effort. Do not start unless you are not 100 % healthy. It can be dangerous to run if you are sick or feel poor.
Here are some important guidelines for the Jubilee Marathon.
  • Drink properly during the race
  • Wear a headgear if it is sunny and warm
  • Preserve your strength until the last part of the race.

    Advice to supporters
    Do you have one or more supporters who want to cheer you on during the race, we have some advice how to go to the turning point and then back to the Olympic Stadium via underground and commuter train.
    It should not be any problems to follow a runner who is finishing on four hours or longer.

    The Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912-2012 will follow the 1912 Marathon race as closely as possible. The start is inside the Stockholm Stadium which have been preserved during these hundred years with graceful dignity.

    10 436 runners are entered. 2 569 women and 7 867 men are found in the start list. 65 different nations are represented. Beside Sweden, Germany is the biggest nation (716 entries), followed by Finland (654 entries), Denmark (302) and USA (237 entries).

    The course is 40,075 metres
    The course for the Jubilee Marathon has now been determined and two separate measurements has been undertaken. The distance is 40,075 metres – 125 metres shorter than the 1912 Olympic course.
    The monument for the 1912 Olympic marathon will be moved before the Jubilee Marathon.

    The registration for the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912–2012 is open again. 1,100 places in the marathon have been reserved for the official travel agencies. Some of these reserved places have now been returned.

    In the official results it listed simply KK. He was called Ken by his South African teammates. In the Swedish newspapers of the time, he was referred to as Kenneth but the real name of the 1912 Olympic Marathon Champion is Kennedy Kane McArthur.

    Test of the start
    On 11 December the runners in Team Stockholm Marathon participated in a test of the starting procedure that will be used at the Jubilee Marathon.
    The runners entered the Olympic Stadium through the west gate and then walked 250 metres to the starting line.
    After the start, all runners jogged 350 meters before they exited the Stadium through the south gate.
    ”This test showed us that there can be 2,000 runners in each start group and that there can be ten minutes intervals between the starts”, said race director Bengt Jansson.

    Marathon the focus when Stockholm commemorates the centenary
    Next year is 100 years since the 5th Olympic Games were held in Stockholm and also 100 years since the opening of the Stockholm Olympic Stadium. This will be celebrated in the capital throughout 2012 with over 100 sports and cultural events.
    Two of the most important Jubilee events are the ASICS Stockholm Marathon on 2 June and the Jubilee Marathon on 14 July.

    By 21 July 7,112 runners from 56 countries have registered for the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912–2012. The plan was to accept a maximum of 7,000 runners, but now the organising clubs have decided to accept registration from 500 more runners.

    The registration for the Jubilee Marathon opened at 13:55 CET on 14 July – seven minutes later than planned due to technical problems with the web site..
    During the first hour 2,455 runners registered for the race. At 21:00 CET 5,186 runners had registered.

    Registration will open here on the race website at 13:48 on 14 July 2011 (exactly 99 years after the starting gun in 1912).
    However, runners who enter the 2012 ASICS Stockholm Marathon will be able to register for the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912-2012 at the same time that they register for the 2012 ASICS Stockholm Marathon.     Four marathons in Stockholm in 2012
    In 2012 there will be four marathons in Stockholm. Vällingby Marathon at the end of March, Stockholm Marathon at the beginning of June, Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912-2012 on 14 July and the Winter Marathon in the beginning of November.
    It is the first time since 1983 that four marathons have taken place in Stockholm within one year.


    City of Stockholm Sports councellor, Regina Kevius, puts a spade in the ground to commemorate exactly 100 years since the construction of Stockholm Stadium began.

    100 years since the construction began
    In cold, biting wind and light snow, the 100 year anniversary was commemorated of the first spade in the ground in the construction of Stockholm Stadium. On 23 November a frozen group of people gathered at one of the arena’s long jump pits to celebrate exactly 100 years since building began of the capital’s classical Olympic stadium.

    The city has allocated 12 million SEK to celebrate the 100 year Jubilee of the Stockholm Olympics during the summer of 2012. Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912-2012 will be one of the most important events of this Jubilee celebration.

    There is a great interest in the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912 – 2012. By 17 November, 8,058 runners had registered an "expression of interest" to take part in the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912–2012.

    Great international interest
    There is also great interest from outside Sweden in Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912-2012. In association with New York Marathon early in November, Bengt Jansson and Malin Aho from Stockholm Marathon met a group of international travel agents from TOURS to talk about the Jubilee Marathon.

    This summer, preparations will begin for the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912-2012.
    On Wednesday 14 July, a test race will be organised on the 1912 Olympic Marathon course. We will run 20km, from the Stockholm Olympic Stadium to the turning point at Sollentuna Church, the location of the memorial stone for the 1912 Olympic Marathon.
    If you happen to be in Stockholm on this day, you are welcome to come to Stockholm Olympic Stadium. We will start at 18:00.
    There will be groups running the course at difference paces. You can choose the group which suits you best.

    Marathon Day – the big day during the 1912 Olympic Games
    Sunday 14 July was the big day during the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. Just as in London 1908 and Athens 1906, it was the marathon which captured the public’s interest.
    For the organisers who prepared for this race for over two years, the weather was the worst imaginable, blue sky, sun and more than 30 degrees in the shade.

    A Tour of the 1912 Olympic Course
    Work on the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912–2012 began in earnest in November 2009 when a group from the Stockholm Marathon office together with several other relevant individuals studied the proposed course.
    At the Jubilee race on 14 July 2012, the course – exactly like the Olympic course one hundred years earlier – will be 40,200 metres. Then an extra stretch will be added at the end to reach the distance of 42,195 metres which is today the official marathon distance.

    Stockholm celebrates the 1912 Olympics
    The 100th anniversary of the 1912 Summer Olympics is a high priority of the City Council ”It will be celebrated in numerous ways”, promises Inger Bavner, Head of the Stockholm Leisure. The anniversary is supported by the City Council, the Swedish Olympic Committee, the Swedish Athletic Association, the Swedish Sports Confederation, and the Stockholm Sports Confederation.

    Coffee and tea at the 1912 drink stations
    The historian Ake Jonsson studies the 1912 Olympics. He is writing a book in the subject, to be released by the 100th anniversary. Jonsson has not dwelled in the marathon race yet, but he found out a remarkable note concerning the drink stations along the course:
    “During the race they served coffee, tea, water plus lemon and orange slices”, tells Jonsson.

    Three years to go – 2,000 have registered
    14 July, exactly three years to the Jubilee Marathon Stockholm 1912 – 2012, 1.988 runners have registered an “expression of interest” for the race.
    In September the organising clubs Hässelby and Spårvägen will start detailed planning for the 2012 Jubilee Marathon. One of the first tasks will be to decide a route, which will follow as closely as possible the route of the 1912 Olympic race.
    In 1912 the distance was 40,200 metres. Today the official marathon distance is 42,195 metres. In 2012 official times will be recorded both at 40,200 and 42,195 metres.

    1 June: ASICS Stockholm Marathon
    The 35th ASICS Stockholm Marathon will be an exiting race in a beautiful city with 21,500 runners from all over the world. Enthusiastic spectators line the route in the Swedish capital. At the finish in the classical 1912 Olympic Stadium thousands of fans greet the runners.
